Decriminalizing Criminality: progressives new approach to crime

 

Justice in Maryland is no longer based on facts, procedures or the rule of law. Instead this profoundly blue state has moved beyond the realm of civilized society. Mob rule has instilled itself both on the streets and in the government that empowers the criminal element. Recent riots in Maryland’s largest city, Baltimore, display a city at the mercy of nocuous politicians and an uncivil electorate that supports them. Border to border Baltimore is a city that bleeds daily. Listed as one of the most violent in the “World” little has been done to stem the blood flow from those who are being victimized. Contrary to rational mindset the police not the looters, arsonists, drug dealers and murderers have become the focus of the problems razing Baltimore. In the aftermath of Freddie Gray’s death the city became a virtual war zone. Under the auspices of Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake police were told to stand down allowing street violence to become unhinged. The few arrested were either released quickly or given lighter charges than their actions deserved. In essence criminality was debased leaving in its wake lawlessness condoned by City Hall.

 

Left wing pundits jumped at the chance to knock the police. Guilty was their verdict before the charges dried on paper concerning Freddie Gray’s death. President Obama gave another of his diversity lectures as Hillary Clinton claimed mass arrests should stop. Both were far afield of the problems which engineered the riots of those days. In their minds and others of the same ilk crime should be decriminalized. That is, actions of thugs and street vermin should be looked upon as exercises in redefined freedoms not criminal activity. With recent riots in other cities few were arrested and fewer appropriately charged. Progressives trumped law and order relinquishing the responsible from the guilt of their actions. Worse police were given a black eye by those who should be backing them most, government officials. Politicians in Maryland and elsewhere allowing mob rule have set a precedent. In the event the judicial system does not side with those on the streets looting, arson and other crimes should be expected. Why? Because those who want to move up the food chain granted them the right to riot uninhibited by the men and women in blue. Police should reconsider their positions in hotbeds of hate towards them such as Baltimore. Let the mob govern themselves. This is what they want and deserve.

Murder, rape and other violent crimes have caused Baltimore to be listed as one of the most violent cities in the World. Recently Baltimore was found to be 36^th on the planet in terms of killings with 38 deaths per 100,000 residents. Few other cities in America have received this distinction. Ironically Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake and her minions have done little to stem the tide of violence occurring daily within the confines of Baltimore. Sadly this Mayor is at war with her own police department. She requested the United States Attorney General’s Office to investigate her police department for brutality towards civilians. With respect for police ebbing to new lows these brave warriors must confront the predatory population daily. Body cameras would be an excellent addition to the armaments of the local police. Yet the Mayor will not allow a body camera bill, passed in the City Council, to become law.http://baltimore.cbslocal.com/2014/11/18/baltimore-body-cameras-passed-despite-mayors-veto-vow/  Mayor Rawlings-Blake worries the information collected by the cameras may be used improperly. She plans to form an investigatory group to study the issue. Behind her nonsensical rejection of body cameras lies the real reason for her vow to defeat this issue. Body cameras would enable the police to prove within a degree of certainty how a crime was committed. Additionally cameras would display who is brutalizing whom during an arrest. Mayor Rawlings-Blake’s disingenuous motivations on this issue will not make the public safer. Instead police will continue to confront brutality claims with little recourse to prove otherwise.

 

Baltimore residents and those who visit the city are in constant fear of victimization. Crime that used to be hidden in the shadows is now blatantly occurring in broad daylight. Violence has spread to every neighborhood in the city. Daily police reports indicate an array of crimes, some so hideous their description is beyond comprehension. Social decay, perpetuated by an entitlement mentality, is at the nidus of many negative issues in Baltimore. Attempts to rectify the crime problem over the last decade have been challenged on every level. When police made efforts to stem the blood flow the Department’s leaders would be either be fired or declared an enemies of the city. Schools cannot discipline children on their way to crime ridden lives because some lawyer somewhere will shout Civil Rights. Government officials curry favor with City’s residents for votes so status quo not change is inevitable from this arrangement. From the City Council to the present Governor’s Office it is to their advantage to prevent Baltimore from moving forward. The long term answer is leadership which is sorely lacking at the city and state levels. Without leadership Baltimore will continue to be immersed in the criminal quagmire for which it has become known.

We must take a serious look at our laws and how they are enforced

Most people are for law and order, and most obey the laws that keep society functioning. And most have great respect for the men and women who have the sometimes-dangerous job of enforcing those laws.

That said, some laws are just plain dumb and should be done away with, and what is more important, there are so many laws, rules and regulations today that no one can know all the decrees from the federal, state and local governments that affect him or her, and therefore it is impossible to obey them all. This over-regulated environment puts each of us in the position of likely being in violation of one or more of them at any given moment.

What's worse than so many decrees from so many sources, however, is what seems to be a growing tendency of law enforcement agencies at all levels to imagine that even tiny infractions warrant the most dramatic responses.

Case in point: After making a purchase at a Charlottesville, Va. grocery store one night, a 20-year-old University of Virginia student and two roommates were approached in their car by a group of six men and one woman in street clothes. "They were showing unidentifiable badges after they approached us, but we became frightened, as they were not in anything close to a uniform," she recalled in a written account of the incident.

Police say one of the group jumped on the hood of her car. The girl said one drew a gun, and they tried to break out car windows. Unsure who they were, the girl tried to flee the dark parking lot and called 911. Given the circumstances and stories of people being assaulted by phony police officers, who could blame her?

It turned out to be a squad of plainclothes state Alcoholic Beverage Control officers who suspected the girl had purchased beer in the store – she hadn’t – and was under-age. She spent the night in jail as a result.

Question: Who at the ABC thought this procedure actually made sense? Is it reasonable for a squad of plainclothes agents to approach three female college students in a dark parking lot, fail to adequately identify themselves, point a gun at them, jump on their car and try to break out the windows because they think one of them had bought beer that she might not be old enough to purchase?

Prosecutors dropped charges against the young woman, describing her as having panicked at the sight of plainclothes agents who approached her and her roommates.

Case 2: When the Leander, Texas police wanted to serve a warrant on Bradly Simpson, they sent officers to his home. When no one responded to the knock on the front door, a couple of officers walked around the side of the house toward the back yard whereupon they saw two German Shepards coming toward them. One officer pulled his gun and fired three shots. The police said the dog was growling and aggressively coming at them. Fortunately, the officer’s aim was not good and only one of the dogs was hit, but only wounded.

After that spectacle, the police were unable to serve the warrant because they were at the wrong address, and in the wrong neighborhood. Worse than that, not far from where the dog was shot the home owners’ terminally-ill six year-old grandchild was playing.

Worse, yet, the home owners said neither dog was aggressive, that they were merely curious about who was visiting their home, and had never behaved the way the police claimed. And, as it turns out, the lady of the house is a professional dog trainer, and therefore knows about dog behavior, and furthermore noted that there are routinely customers visiting her home, so strangers don’t spook her dogs.

And what heinous crime prompted the police to go to Mr. Simpson’s home to serve the warrant? He had an expired vehicle registration.

Leander police officials say what happened was "an unfortunate accident." Wrong: What happened is that the police screwed up.

The number of rogue law enforcement personnel that intentionally abuse their authority and position is surely very small. Nevertheless, instances of over-aggressive law enforcement action and plain dumb mistakes like these are indefensible and intolerable, and there appears to be a growing attitude toward over-aggressive behavior.  

To maintain the public trust and respect government and law enforcement are going to have to stop doing stupid and dangerous things like these examples, and even worse incidents that have caused serious injury and even death for innocent citizens.

Solutions? Do we really need so many law enforcement officers that seven of them can spend nights sitting around in one store parking lot waiting to catch an under-age person buying beer? Does an expired registration really justify armed police visiting the vehicle owner’s home?

What about accountability? Officials that exercise bad judgment or act rashly must be disciplined, encouraging them to carefully consider how to properly and safely do their jobs, and also demonstrating that public officials really take seriously their duty to adequately serve the people they work for.

Something must be done, and the sooner, the better.

“Stupid” sometimes has fatal consequences

There are two items in the news today illustrate both how stupid some people are as well as how serious the consequences of being stupid sometimes can be. 

We might be tempted to think that as many such examples as there are of idiotic behavior having horrible consequences that people would begin to figure out that they should stop and carefully think things through before acting.

Holding that particular belief gives people far more credit than they have earned, as the following two tragic stories more than amply illustrate.

The aftermath of these two events also illustrates how some people – too many people – will try to relieve the stupid people of responsibility for their stupid behavior.

In the first incident, from Fox News:

A teenage mom took action recently when an intruder broke into her Oklahoma home. Sarah McKinley shot and killed the man after calling 911 and speaking to a dispatcher who, upon being asked by McKinley if she should shoot the suspect, answered that she should do whatever necessary to ‘protect her baby.’ McKinley says she did just that.

According to the 18-year-old’s account, two men began beating on her front door, prompting McKinley to take her three-month-old baby and lock herself in a room with a gun before calling emergency dispatch.

When the intruders finally got through the door, the mom had no more time left to wait for police and made a judgment call.

“I waited ’til he came in the door, and when he did I shot him. I didn’t know what else to do … I wanted [the police] to hurry and get here before I had to do it, but they didn’t get here quick enough,” she said.

On today’s America Live, Megyn Kelly pointed out that under Oklahoma law it is legal to use deadly force against an intruder, in certain circumstances. Prosecution in the case has decided not to charge McKinley with any crime. The intruder had a second accomplice, however, and he has absorbed the charges, set to be tried for first-degree murder.

In Kelly’s Court, Lis Wiehl and Joey Jackson got into a heated debate over the legal decision, with Wiehl saying the prosecution got this ‘exactly right.’ Do you agree?

And in the second incident:

BROWNSVILLE, Texas (AP) - An armed eighth-grader gunned down by police officers in the hallway of his Texas middle school Wednesday was brandishing a pellet gun that looked like a firearm, and he refused repeated orders to lower the weapon before the officers opened fire, police said.

The carbon-dioxide powered pellet gun 15-year-old Jaime Gonzalez was holding looked like a handgun, and the initial report to police that sent officers rushing to Cummings Middle School Wednesday morning was for a student seen holding a gun, Orlando Rodriguez, Brownsville's interim police chief, said at a news conference.

Robert Valle, a 13-year-old who was among the school's 750 students locked down in their classrooms during the confrontation, said he heard police run down the hallway and yell "put the gun down," before several shots were fired.

"He had plenty of opportunities to lower the weapon ... and he didn't want to," Rodriguez said. Two officers fired three shots, striking Gonzalez at least twice, he said. The autopsy results are pending.

In the case of the mother defending herself and her son, it is difficult to think that anyone would conceive that the woman should be charged in this case. But, liberals have the capacity to defend the most outrageous conduct.

In the case of the 15 year-old student, his parents are understandably grief-stricken that their child is dead, but in their grief want to blame police instead of their son. Most 15 year-olds are in the 10th grade, so we must wonder why this boy was only in the 8th grade.

Reportedly, he assaulted one student prior to the shootout, and verbally threatened to shoot at police.

It is difficult to feel any sympathy for the cretins who broke into the young mother’s home, or the kid who took a real-looking gun to a school and threatened to shoot people. They acted stupidly and got what they deserved.

It is equally impossible to blame the young mother for defending herself and her child in her own home, or the police who thought the gun was real and acted when the boy refused to drop it.

They are innocent and should be commended for acting appropriately in a dangerous situation.

What a number. A new record!

Is it the number of games the Chicago Cubs have lost in the last month? NO!

Is it the number of bribes any Chicago Politician took yesterday? NO!

Is it the number of seconds that Oprah went without mentioning herself, Dr. Phil, or Barack Obama? NO!

It is the number of young men and women who were gunned down this past school year. 36.

With three weeks left before summer break, a record 36 Chicago Public Schools students have been killed this school year, marking the third straight year that youth homicides have climbed into double digits. Chicago has surpassed New York City and Los Angeles for having the highest youth homicide rate in the nation.

"I think people in Chicago have almost gotten numb to the statistics," said Dexter Voisin, a researcher at the University of Chicago who studies the impact of violence on adolescents.

The latest victim in Chicago's long year of student killings is 15-year-old Alex Arellano. On May 1, he was chased, beaten with baseball bats, run over by a car, shot and burned. His body was found days after he disappeared from his family's home on the city's South Side.

Police continue to investigate the killing; gang activity has been suggested. His grieving family members have denied any gang connections and continue to look for answers.

"The homicide rate is just the tip of the iceberg," Mr. Voisin said. "Those with nonfatal injuries are almost 100 times that of our homicide rates. You think for about every one kid who is murdered, 100 kids witness the murder or are victims of nonfatal injuries, of robberies, muggings and gang-related incidents. A lot of times, this exposure goes undocumented or unreported."

Black youths, he said, are two times more likely than white youths to fail or drop out of school, and at the same time they are also eight to 10 times more likely to be victims of homicide than whites.

"I don't even know where to begin," said Diane Latiker, who runs a program for at-risk youths out of her home in the city's Roseland neighborhood. "There aren't any words for what I feel for what is going on for our youth."

Ms. Latiker uses three rooms of her six-room apartment to run a nonprofit program called Kids Off the Block. She offers tutoring, mentoring and travel opportunities designed to show Chicago youths who want successful futures that the violent culture they see daily is not the norm.

The local drug dealer in a big car with flashy rims, wearing cool sneakers, appears to many to be the model of success, Ms. Latiker said.

"The A and B students, they have family and community support," she said. "What about the kid who is struggling, hanging out there on the street corner and joining that gang because he feels hopeless? That's what I'm hearing from our youth. They feel they have nothing to live for."

Where is Jesse Jackson? Where is Al Sharpton? Maxine Waters? Why is the Daily Kos and Huffington Post both silent on this? Why is the left silent? Black children are being killed!

Yet not a word about this from them. If it came out that Black children were being killed by the Chicago police, white men, or KKK members, they would be marching in the streets. But a little gang violence and they remain silent on this issue. THAT IS RACISM!

Why is it that Jackson, Waters and Sharpton will go ballistic if the 'N' word is used by a comedian, radio personality or other WHITE person, but are remaining silent when a rapper like: Mac Dre, Snoop Dog, Master P, and Lil Wayne all tell young people not to snitch, don't cooperate with the police. So the murderers go free to kill again and again. The rappers get rich, the murderers get away with the crime, and the people of the neighborhood are less safe, less secure in their homes.

And still the only cry that goes out is: Take away people's guns. If there were no guns, there would be no gun violence, the liberals say. The truth is that these crimes are not committed with legal weapons, but illegal ones. AK-47's to be exact. That is not the type of weapon one can walk into a gun shop and pick up.

Gun control is NOT the answer. The answer is for the Black Community to stop the culture of gangsterism. It is for parents to sit down with their kids and explain to them that the rappers and gangsters are not the best role-models for them. That snitching is not wrong. That testifying in court is your civic duty. That solving one's problems with a shooting is just plain stupid. Most important it is time for Black leaders to say these things. For Black leaders to march in the streets of Chicago screaming for justice for these 36 children. For Black leaders to stand up to the gangsters and take their culture back.

In September, Chicago will begin a new school year. Let us all pray that the next year will see no child shot, no child killed by gangsters. That each child will have a chance to grow up and become a useful and productive member of this great nation.

MSM Hides Another “Resident Alien” Murderer

If you’ve watched enough local network affiliate news broadcasts, you get a feel for how it’s usually done – especially when the story is about a gruesome murder. There’s always the on-the-scene reporter live at the scene. There are usually brief interviews with neighbors and relatives of both the victim and the suspect. If the suspect gets away, the story stays hot and little by little more and more is revealed about the suspect. And so it goes – usually. But not so with this story! Not one peep from the MSM affiliates or the big newspapers about the suspect’s background. The silence about the suspect was so deafening I decided that there had to be more to this story.

Last week 19-year-old Melanie Goodwin, a Denton, Texas resident, was bludgeoned to death, set on fire, and her charred body dumped by Ernesto Pina Reyes. We know this because . . .

A business surveillance camera captured a grisly scene, showing a man dragging UNT student Melanie Goodwin’s body from her car and setting it on fire, according to an arrest warrant affidavit released Thursday. . . The man in the video was identified as Ernesto Reyes by his girlfriend . . .

Ms. Goodwin’s charred body was found Tuesday morning near a business located in the 3200 block of Keller Springs Road in Carrollton. The Dallas County Medical Examiner determined that Ms. Goodwin, 19, died of multiple blunt force injuries. . .

"She was last seen at a Denton convenience store Tuesday where police believe Mr. Reyes, who authorities say did not know Ms. Goodwin, approached her and asked her for a ride. . ."

Donovan Young, a friend of Reyes, “gave Reyes a gas can, money for fuel, and later helped to abandon the car his friend had been driving.”

Reyes remains at large and may have even fled to Mexico. Despite being wanted for murder he reportedly is communicating to his myspace.com account. The page, which among other things contains sexual photos, was last updated on September 27, 2007. . .

A MySpace page registered to a 20-year-old Ernesto Reyes of Denton was last updated Thursday, two days after Goodwin's death. It appeared that several lewd images of women had been removed. Singleton said that investigators are aware that someone logged on to the page and that they're looking into it. . .

. . .“Police have issued a murder warrant for the arrest of Ernesto Pina Reyes, a 20-year-old resident alien living in Denton, Texas, in connection with the death of Melanie Goodwin. Reyes remains at large.”

Parents of dead UNT student offer $10,000 reward

Ernesto Reyes, the Denton resident who Carrollton police believe may have killed 19-year-old Melanie Goodwin last week, is still missing.

In an effort to encourage community members to speak up, Goodwin’s family is offering a $10,000 reward for anyone who has information that may lead to the arrest of Reyes. The money is a combination of donations from employees at the Southern Reservation Office of American Airlines and from Goodwin’s friends.

Goodwin’s body — which was burned after she was killed, police said — was found at the 3200 block of Keller Springs Road in Carrollton at about 11 a.m. Sept. 25. The University of North Texas student died from multiple blunt force trauma, according to officials at the Dallas County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Carrollton resident Donovan Young was arrested for tampering with evidence in the death of Goodwin on Thursday. Young was released from the Dallas County Jail on Monday and posted bond on a $125,000 bail.

Police still have no leads as to where Reyes may be, said Sgt. John Singleton, spokesperson for the Carrollton Police Department.

Reyes lives at 8513 Swan Park Drive in Denton, according to police affidavits. Reyes lives with family members, said neighbor David Rush. There was no answer at Reyes’ home Monday afternoon.

But now there’s some things we can do . . .

According to today’s Fort Worth Star Telegram, America’s Most Wanted has joined the search. Please note how this newspaper story below also failed to note that Reyes is a resident alien.

Pay attention to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram story below . Do you read anything about Reyes being a resident alien?

America's Most Wanted has joined the search for the man sought in connection with the killing of University of North Texas sophomore Melanie Goodwin.

The show's Web site features a case file on Ernesto Pina Reyes, 20, of Denton, along with a description of the crime and images of Goodwin and Reyes. The case was mentioned on Saturday's episode.

A $10,000 reward is being offered for information leading to Reyes' arrest, said Matthew Bobo, a spokesman for the Goodwins. The money has been donated by the employees of the Southern Reservation Office of American Airlines and friends of the Goodwins.

Goodwin was last seen alive at a Denton convenience store about 1:40 a.m. Sept. 25. She was talking with Reyes, who asked her for a ride, according to police.

Her burned body was found in the 3200 block of Keller Springs Road in Carrollton about nine hours later. Police said a surveillance videotape from that location shows a man matching Reyes' description dragging a body from Goodwin's car. They issued a murder warrant for him Wednesday.

An acquaintance of Reyes, Donovan R. Young, 19, was arrested last week on a charge of tampering with evidence in the case. He was released from the Dallas Jail after posting $2,500 bail this weekend, according to a jail spokesman.

Relatives have said Goodwin had no connection to Reyes or Young before she was killed. The America's Most Wanted Web site says Goodwin was on her way home from an event when she stopped for gas.
