Bloggers Are Not Lazy Activists!

Last month Faultline USA conducted a small unscientific poll of 42 political activist bloggers.

Here was the question:

Theatrical producer Hal Prince has criticized this generation for lulling themselves into blogging each other rather than engaging in political activism. Do you agree?

Results:

Yes – 6(11%)
No – 27(64%)
Somewhat true – 9(21%)
I don’t know – 1(2%)

Are they right? What say you?

Blogging for Credentials at the United Nations

As we look into the wide-spread corruption within the U.N, it’s important to think about where we source our news. Did you know that you might be able to blog at the U.N., but you would need media credentials? Before I get into the business of the U.N. bloggers, let me take an editorial moment or two here.

There are bloggers and there are citizen journalists, and there are “credentialed” media types who also blog, and there are bloggers who are also citizen journalists, and there are some bloggers who have media credentials, and you have many bloggers who wear several hats. For the most part, political bloggers tend to be op-ed types. We opine about the news but rarely do we spend most of our time in first-hand participatory news gathering. That’s the role of reporters and of some citizen journalists.

Blogging is continually transforming and naturally it is becoming far more complex.

The dilemma of “opine blogging” is that it is reliant on outside news sources where analysis is second-hand at best. The dilemma of full-fledged citizen journalists, on the other hand, is that they often need credentials awarded by large organizations (such as the U.N.) and that can put their objectivity in question. We hardly have to mention the dilemma of reporters who are only as objective as the MSM rag that owns them.

When anything becomes too complex, and where roles often overlap, there’s always some large organization waiting in the wings to be the first to suggest credentialing and/or licensing. It’s big business in this country. The first step in this process is to suggest and then set up voluntary codes of ethics. The next step is to create a prestigious membership role. Membership by invitation creates the desired amount of “Credential Envy.” Credential Envy fuels the spin-off workshop and seminar engines designed to give perspective members what they need to meet membership eligibility. When enough members have joined to turn a nice steady profit for said not-for-profit organization, membership fees start going up dramatically every year. Oh yes, and then there’s liability insurance, and finally a threshold is met where by popular demand licensing legislation is enacted. Guess who controls the licensing standards? You got it. It’s that big organization that was just waiting in the wings. Perhaps that might be an organization such as the U.N.? After all, uniform blogging standards and regulation would fall right into the U.N’s One World Government game plan.

Don’t laugh! Such a thing is probably not far off in the world of blogging and from my perspective it would destroy the true democracy of blogging. At worst it would turn most opine bloggers into little more than an asterisk at the bottom of a credentialed blogger’s comment page. At best, it would relegate non-credentialed bloggers to the bottom of the Google hit heap!

Read about the need for “self-regulation” among local bloggers in Malaysia.

Read “In Defense of Assholes (Sort of)” on the proposed bloggers code of ethics.

The Media Blogger’s Association is one of those large organizations that is working to create codes of ethics in the world of blogging.

"The Media Bloggers Association is a nonpartisan organization dedicated to promoting, protecting and educating its members; supporting the development of "blogging" or "citizen journalism" as a distinct form of media; and helping to extend the power of the press, with all the rights and responsibilities that entails, to every citizen."

What about Blogging at the U.N.?

According to the NY Times, Matthew Lee, the resident blogger of the United Nations press corps, is the only blogger at the United Nations with media credentials. See the following excerpts:

“Mr. Lee, a well-known gadfly who often presses banks to revise their policies on mortgage loans to the poor, is the only blogger at the United Nations with media credentials, entitling him to free office space and access to briefings and press conferences. There had been a second accredited blogger, Pincas Jawetz, a 73-year-old retired energy policy consultant, but he was ejected last month on the grounds that he had distracted too many briefings with off-topic questions.

The United Nations is one of the only institutions of its size and importance that currently allow bloggers not affiliated with larger, more traditional media companies into the permanent press corps.

The Democrats and Republicans allowed bloggers into their 2004 conventions. But the question of whether bloggers should be considered credentialed journalists is a relatively new one at the United Nations, in part, it seems, because the foreign policy debates here are considered mind-numbing to many Americans. . .”

Now that’s the respect we American bloggers get from the U.N.

“Bloggers in the U.S. seem mostly concerned about domestic politics,” said Mr. Lee, one of about 200 full-time resident correspondents at the United Nations (another 1,500 have permanent credentials).

The day-to-day work of the United Nations, he said, involves passing “boring resolutions and delivering food. Nobody cares.” . . .

Ok, so apparently Mr. Lee obviously isn’t reading too many conservative political blogs. The article continues . . .

“ . . .He established Inner City Press in 1987 as a print newsletter and turned his attention to the United Nations in late 2005. Today, Inner City Press operates as both an online nonprofit organization and as a Web site with the motto “investigative reporting from the inner city to Wall Street to the United Nations.”

Mr. Lee draws a distinction between his investigations at the United Nations and the criticism the institution faces from right-wing bloggers. “I end up getting a lot of dirt, not because I’m a right-winger, just because I write about the agencies,” said Mr. Lee, 41, who says he regularly works 13-hour days and lives on the money from several fellowships he won a few years ago. . .”

In other words, dirt is dirt but if you are right-wing you happen to see far more U.N. dirt! Pay close attention to the following paragraph.

“ . . . The debate over who should gain access to the inner sanctum came to a head last month when Mr. Jawetz, who follows sustainable development for his Web site called SustainabiliTank.info, did not have his accreditation renewed. The United Nations department of public information cited his Web site’s lack of “a substantial amount of original news content” as well as complaints from other reporters that Mr. Jawetz’s questions were “more consistent with that of a nongovernmental organization advocate.”

On March 29, his last day at the noon briefing, Mr. Jawetz created a scene by using the question period to read a letter informing him that his renewal request had been declined.

“I’m not covering everything, I’m writing about what is important,” said Mr. Jawetz, who said in an interview that his site published impartial journalism, not advocacy.

Although United Nations reporters and officials refer to Mr. Lee as the only remaining blogger, he is not the only member of the press corps who blogs. Joe Lauria, who covers the United Nations on a freelance basis for The Boston Globe, writes for The Huffington Post, a liberal-leaning blog; on the more conservative side, Claudia Rosett, a contributor to National Review and a former member of The Wall Street Journal’s editorial board, has a blog at claudiarosett.pajamasmedia.com. . .”

Here are the links to the web sites for Mr. Jawetz and Mr. Lee. Mr. Lee's e-mail is Matthew.Lee [at] innercitypress.com

Here are the links for the other two bloggers mentioned in the NY Times article:Caludia Rossett (conservative) and Joe Lauria (liberal).

Thinking Blogger Award

I am honored to receive this award tag and want to thank Spree of Wake Up America for recommending me for this award.
>
Now that I’ve been tagged twice for this award, I have the difficult task of tagging just five blogs to also receive The Thinking Blogger Award recognition from our fellow bloggers.
>
I read quite a few blogs daily and narrowing this tagging process down isn’t easy because there are so many great bloggers out there. So here goes . . .
>
I am going to start with Spree of Wake Up America. Spree is dedicated to providing in-depth coverage of the War in Iraq on a daily basis and often posts breaking news updates several times a day. Her sound conservative commentary is always on the mark and she doesn’t pull any punches.
>
Next is Debbie Hamilton from Right Truth. Debbie posts on a variety of subjects dear to our conservative hearts, but her focus is reporting on the Middle East and Islam. Her reports are clear, concise, and to the point. Additionally, Debbie frequently posts several thought-provoking updates daily.
>
Woman Honor Thyself is a daily must read. Angel’s biting humor, humorous pics, wise-cracks, and memorable phrases always fall into the category of “I wish I had said that!”
>
Maggie’s Notebook is a newer blog, but she’s come on strong and has developed quite a readership in a very short time. Maggie also writes about a variety of political issues and is especially focused on illegal immigration and the political culture divide.
>
Last and never least is Jim Simpson of Truth & Consequences. Jim Simpson is a former White House staff economist and budget analyst (1987-1993). His expert analysis of current political issues comes from a deep concern for the fate our nation “Lulled by affluence and self-indulgent apathy . . .”
>
Rules of participation:
Should you choose to participate, please make sure you pass this list of rules to the blogs you are tagging.
>
The participation rules are simple:
1. If, and only if, you get tagged, write a post with links to 5 blogs that make you think,
2. Link to this post so that people can easily find the exact origin of the meme,
my entry permalink http://faultlineusa.blogspot.com/2007/04/thinking-blogger-award.html
3. Optional: Proudly display the ‘Thinking Blogger Award’ with a link to the post that you wrote.
>
P.S. Send an e-mail or leave a comment for the blogs you have recommended for the award. “Congratulations, you won a . . .”
>
Once again, thanks to Spree of Wake up America for nominating me.

Featured Contributor’s Blog: Maggie’s Notebook

One of the joys of having regular contributors is the fresh ideas and new perspectives they to your blog. Additionally, you develop a close working relationship with your contributors who are always there to offer help, give encouragement, or to just fill in when you need to take a break. I am indebted to Debbie of Right Truth and Spree of Wake up America for all the help they’ve given and contributions they’ve shared.

Last week I planned on writing an entry to introduce you to our newest contributor, Maggie of Maggie’s Notebook. I had to delay this entry when Maggie’s computer took a fatal nose-dive and crashed big time. Maggie is back on line now and she’s ready to burn up the internet again with her clear, concise, and insightful conservative political blog.

Here are some of Maggie’s posts that she had cross-posted to Faultline USA.
Troops ‘Dissent’ and ‘Protest’ to Congress

Thomas Sowell on Public Golf and Poverty
Life on our Southern Borders
Tuesday’s Freedom & Victory Bloglist

I asked Maggie to tell our readers a little about herself:

I am female, married and I live in a very red, heartland state. I believe that nothing matters without the freedom to live freely.

I have owned both retail and wholesale businesses. I have traveled to many wonderful places, both for business and pleasure.

I wrote for regional press for many years, on the stock market, Christianity, health, crime and life style pleasantries such as wine, food and travel.

I’m interested in all conservative issues – eyeing each with a sharp slant toward hard fought for, often died for, American freedoms. Every issue, whether conservative or liberal, is about living freely, or not.

I believe in strengthening families, imprisoning all pedophiles on the first conviction, for life. I believe that those who commit crimes against humanity, should not an opportunity to do so again. I believe paying for prisons is a good and noble use of tax money. I believe in funding well-run prisons. When appropriate, I’m for the death penalty.

I support The War on Terror. I am attempting to speak-out against radical Islam, as are many bloggers. I want to abolish the United Nations, but believe that will not happen, so I’m for reform. I am appalled at our “allies,” France, Germany and Russia, and the Oil for Food debacle. I am also appalled at the ACLU. How does an organization with the word “American” in its name, incite against the War on Terror with the Abu Ghraib incident, while defending the North American Man-Boy Love Association (NAMBLA)?

My husband and I are like-minded, especially when it comes to politics. If I am lacking focus on an issue, he offers a clear view through his “eyes.” I go back to the keyboard with new enthusiasm and a fresh attitude toward my subject. I am interested in many things. I am a news junkie, an avid reader, I play bridge, I was addicted to Sudoku until I began blogging. Blogging is the cure.

Woman Honor Thyself Wins The Blogger Halo Award!

Voting ended this morning at midnight 12:00AM (CST). There were 140 votes cast. Only one vote per voter was allowed. Angel of Woman Honor Thyself won with 54.3% of the votes (76 votes). The runner-up was Debbie of Right Truth with 25.7% of the votes (36 votes). Congratulations to Saint Angel and Saint Debbie!!!

I can say without reservation that Saint Angel and Saint Debbie are well-deserving winners. Saint Angel has been a faithful reader (often leaving comments) and she has always given this blogger encouragement . And Saint Debbie offered advice and hands-on help when I needed it this week.

This has been a wonderful experience for me as well as for the many of us who wanted to have a way just to say “Thanks” to those veteran bloggers who have selflessly helped us navigate this crazy blogosphere. In reality everyone is a winner. Every nominee is a winner because they have gone way beyond the call of duty by demonstrating a selfless commitment to help other bloggers solve their blogging problems. Everyone who made the effort to place a fellow blogger in nomination is a winner for just showing gratitude. And everyone who dropped by to vote is a winner because they cared enough to say “Thanks.”

This was a brain-storm-not-even-a-shoe-string effort that suddenly came together when the idea first dawned on me a little over one week ago. We couldn’t have pulled it off if it weren’t for a couple of blogger’s who helped design The Blogger Halo Award Logo. I want to thank Saint Debbie of Right Truth for designing the logo that delightfully captures the sudden joy we all feel when a total stranger extends a helping hand to pull us up through another blogging challenge. I also want to thank Saint Spree of Wake Up America for creating the hot-link code for the logos, and for always being there to patiently answer my endless questions. Saint Spree's constant hands-on help was the inspiration for this award.

To the other nominee Saints that I personally haven’t come to know as well yet, I just want to say that you now know that someone out there cared enough to nominate you and to vote for you because you cared enough to lend a hand when someone was in need.

This experience has taught me so much about the real kindness of humanity - especially of those who reside here in the blogosphere. It’s all about sharing what we’ve learned from others along the way and about building a real sense of community.

This morning I’m looking forward to the 2nd annual Blogger Halo Award. I hope you are too! We’ll have plenty of time for refinements and improvements. If you have suggestions or would just like to help, contact me at faultlineusa@yahoo.com .

Any nominee who would like to have a copy of the final voting poll screen shot, contact me at faultlineusa@yahoo.com and I’ll sent it to you.

Nominate a Blogger for a Halo

The “Blogger’s Halo Award” WILL go to the blogger who has not only created a vital up-to-the minute blog with a sizable readership and dedication to excellence, but this blogger would have gone way beyond the call of duty by demonstrating a selfless commitment to help other bloggers solve their blogging problems.

Nominate your favorite Blogger Saint today

1. Link to this post in your blog.
2. Leave a comment here that describes (in about one paragraph) why you think your favorite blog should receive a Halo. You may leave an anonymous comment if you like. (This is the honor system, so don’t nominate your own blog).
3. Return to this blog next weekend (after the 1st of the year) to vote on the finalists.

Note: You may nominate more than one blog, but follow the above directions with each nomination. Limit your nominations to one blog a day.

The Blogger’s Halo Award 2006

There are a number of Halo awards on the internet, but I’m suggesting something quite unique here. The “Blogger’s Halo Award” would go to the blogger who has not only created a vital up-to-the minute blog with a sizable readership and dedication to excellence, but this blogger would have gone way beyond the call of duty by demonstrating a selfless commitment to help other bloggers solve their blogging problems.

My nomination for this newly created “Blogger’s Halo Award” goes to Wake Up America.

When I began to express my frustration to other Beta Bloggers about not having trackback capability, Wake Up America’s Spreeezie came to my aid. There was a flurry of e-mails as Spree patiently answered my endless questions and held my hand. Spree sent me HTML codes and gave me explicit directions. But beyond that, Spree actually got my trackbacks going! I owe it all to Spree!

Now we bloggers are a somewhat egotistical lot – thinking that the world needs to hear what we have to say. But, when you discover a blogger out there who is willing to go the extra mile for someone they’ve never met . . . to take time out of their busy day . . to actually do it for you without even wanting to take credit for it – that’s a Blogging Saint.

So Saint Spreeezie, you are the first nominee for the “Blogger’s Halo Award 2006!”

Let’s hear it for Wake Up America! And if there are other Blogging Saints you would like to recognize, leave a comment or trackback here.
