National Security: The Lost Political Issue

By guest columnist, Charles E. Sowell

As we close in on the presidential election of 2008, it is becoming more and more evident to many Americans, particularly those who truly understand history, that the fate of America and western civilization may literally hang in the balance. At this point in time Americans have a lot to be concerned with, but it should be apparent that the two most critical concerns facing this country are national security and the economy. Most recently, as a result of the current economic crisis, we have heard very little about national security, despite the fact that we are still engaged in a fierce war with the same group of extremists that attacked us more than 7 years ago. It is time for America to reawaken to the fact that if we do not have national security, we will not have an economy to worry about!

I will leave it to the historians to conclude whether the invasion of Iraq at that unique point in time was the right or wrong decision for America, but from that point forward, it is hard for me to understand the logic of Senator Obama on many foreign policy/national security issues. I am constantly amazed at what appears to be his naiveté on many of these issues. As part of his very elite educational training, did he not study history? Even more amazing to me is that it appears that the majority of the American public has also bought into his guile and glib style over his negligible substance. Past electoral concerns of malaise and apathy seem to pale in comparison to the current naivety of so many Americans, particularly the young, many of whom have not yet had enough life experience, much less understanding of history, to keep from falling under the spell of the first snake oil salesman that comes along.

Senator Obama is a very eloquent orator, and his affable manner and good looks give him the ability to be very persuasive. But when you break down his foreign policy into simple logic, it just doesn’t fly. If Senator Obama’s prior opposition to the surge in Iraq had been successful, America might now be out of that country, but we would have left in defeat and either Al Qaeda or Iran would have quickly moved into the vacuum, providing another base for extremists ready to resume further atrocities against America and the rest of the world. Had we allowed that to happen, we would have also been looked upon by the rest of the world as an unreliable paper tiger for decades to come. Russia, China, and any other strong adversary would be taking advantage of us at every opportunity. Like it or not, defeat in Iraq is not an option.

Senator Obama’s current insistence on establishing a timetable for the withdrawal of American troops from Iraq is also nothing short of pure folly. A smart and determined enemy only has to await the withdrawal of our troops before resuming the fight with an all out effort, with a realistic hope by then that the American public will no longer have the will to rejoin the fight. If you want to win a football game, you don’t broadcast to your opponent the timing of the snap of the ball.

Perhaps the most illustrative example of Senator Obama’s naivety is his self expressed willingness to sit down and negotiate with any adversary without any preconditions. Anyone who knows anything about the art of negotiation understands, first and foremost, that you negotiate only with an adversary that has the authority to negotiate (someone who has the ability to execute the results of that negotiation). Sitting down with someone like Ahmadinejad would not only be a waste of time, but would be foolhardy at best. Any good negotiator also knows that every negotiating session is always preceded by posturing, position measuring (preconditions), and having in mind specific objectives for outcome. Just “sitting down to talk” for the novice negotiator could be a recipe for disaster.

At this critical time it is important for Americans to recognize that proven experience and seasoned knowledge are what we need to lead America out of our current difficulties, not an idealistic member of the intellectually elite. As it has been said by many others before me, this is not a time for on the job training.

An Islamic Call To Pray for Obama

What does the call for prayer have to do with electing Barack Obama for president? Some Arab-Americans are offended by the ad claiming that it is offensive to non-Islamic Arab-Americans.

According to an article earlier this year in The Arab-American News, more than half of the Arab-American community is Christian, “and the majority are of Lebanese origin.” The ad was put up by ArabAmericans4 Obama to show support for Barack Obama.

“We will do everything we can to aid Barack in becoming the next president of the United States of America. It is our goal to Unite Muslims, Christians, and Jews to work together to elect Barack Obama.”

Some question that an Islamic call to prayer in Arabic could unite English speaking Christians and Jews to elect Obama, but this is the claim made by ArabAmericans4 Obama.

The same article also cites statistics showing that Arab Americans (62%) will be voting Democratic this year due to the belief that Republicans support a “permanent presence” in Iraq and show support of the Israeli occupation of Palestine.

That claim made in February seems be holding up because a Zobgy poll taken in September shows that Sen. Barack Obama holds a 21-point lead over Sen. John McCain.

Citing the same Zogby poll, an article in USA Today yesterday shows that Arab-Americans cite the economy, job loss, and a desire for change from the Bush administration Middle East policies as a reason they are turning away from Sen .John McCain.

The Zogby poll indicates that at least one-third of Arab-Americans live in the five battleground states and the majority will be voting for Obama. Some will vote for Obama because of the identity politics of his Arabic name.

“Be proud of America when Barack Hussein Obama is nominated to be president of the United States,” James Zogby, president of the Arab American Institute (AAI) and a former deputy campaign manager of Jesse Jackson’s 1984 presidential run, told the crowd between acts at a comedy club event Aug. 25 at Bar Standard.

There is also a very interesting article this week in The Arab American news, “Why America should listen to Ahmadinejad" by Paul Craig Roberts which claims that America’s our Founding Fathers would have comprehended and endorsed Ahmadinejad's speech to the United Nations.

Ahmadinejad Echoes the Democratic Left

On Sept. 20, 2007, 60 Minutes correspondent Scott Pelley interviewed Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in Tehran, Iran. Sounding like he was speaking from the Daily Kos and Netroots playbook, Ahmadinejad was sending a clear signal to his allies on the Democratic left – especially to Rosie and her ilk. And his message was also a pat on the heads of his pet Dhimmis now running for President on the Democratic ticket.

Why was he constantly smiling? He knows that he’s already got these presidential hopefuls trained and on a tight leash. If they can’t even stand up to MoveOn.org, he knows he’s already got them cowered. For him it's a "Piece o cake"!

Doesn’t he sound just like Rosie???

“The American people still don't know who was behind the bombing of the Twin Towers. Many books in the U.S. have been written about the incident., and there are questions circling in your society. Once you go back, go to the streets, ask the local people who was behind this, what were the reason for that? And, again, I fail to see why you continually say “the American people.“ I have the latest surveys. Eighty percent of the American citizens say that the American government knew about the attack beforehand.”

Pelly asked questions about Ahmadinejad’s desire to visit to the World Trade Center, Iran’s nuclear program, about his view of Bush, and his view of Israel among other things.

Excerpts from the 60 Minutes interview with MAHMOUD AHMADINEJAD. You can read the entire transcript here.

Please note that the entire interview with Ahmadinejad was not broadcast on 60 Minutes. I’ve selected excerpts that demonstrate Ahmadinejad’s pandering to the Democratic left.

AHMADINEJAD: . . . you are representing a media and you're a reporter. The American nation is made up of 300 million people. There are different points of view over there. I would like to think that the points of view of the American people is very close to the points of view of the Iranian people. The American people are very much against and opposed what certain American officials are saying and their points of view. And they're also, the way that the people have voted in the American elections is very telling. And we are criticizing such behavior on the part of the American government. We believe that if anyone just allows himself to accuse others, there will be no possibility for peace and friendship.

PELLEY: What do you mean the American election is telling? What did you take from it?

AHMADINEJAD: What I'm saying is that the American people very clearly have shown that they do not endorse what certain American officials are saying and doing. I remind you of the rallies in Washington a couple of days ago. What were they saying and shouting? Perhaps 70, 80 percent of the American people are against their troops, their sons and daughters being in Iraq and war. And as I said, they're very much against war. And for that matter, the American people are peace-loving people. You shouldn't think that what the American officials are doing and their behavior reflects completely the mood of the American people. And American officials must not make the American people a victim of their wants and wishes. And we make a distinction between the American people and American officials. And the American people are opposed to occupation, the use of force, and also terrorism, the killing of the people of other nations. And this is what we are saying. This is what we believe in. With that in mind, we feel very close to the American people. And I'm sure that this is reciprocal. A couple of days ago, an American scientist, a scholar, wrote to me saying that he has a great love for Iran. And once he passes, he wants to be buried in this country. The two nations are very close to one another. . . .
[snip]

PELLEY: What trait do you admire in President Bush?

AHMADINEJAD: Again, I have a very frank tone. I think that President Bush needs to correct his ways.

PELLEY: What do you admire about him?

AHMADEINEJAD: He should respect the American people.

PELLEY: Is there anything? Any trait?

AHMADINEJAD: As an American citizen, tell me what trait do you admire?

PELLEY: Well, Mr. Bush is, without question, a very religious man, for example, as you are. I wonder if there's anything that you've seen in President Bush that you admire.

AHMADEINEJAD: Well, is Mr. Bush a religious man?

PELLEY: Very much so. As you are.

AHMADEINEJAD: What religion, please tell me, tells you as a follower of that religion to occupy another country and kill its people? Please tell me. Does Christianity tell its followers to do that? Judaism, for that matter? Islam, for that matter? What prophet tells you to send 160,000 troops to another country, kill men, women, and children? You just can't wear your religion on your sleeve or just go to church. You should be truthfully religious. Religion tells us all that you should respect the property, the life of different people. Respect human rights. Love your fellow man. And once you hear that a person has been killed, you should be saddened. You shouldn't sit in a room, a dark room, and hatch plots. And because of your plots, many thousands of people are killed. Having said that, we respect the American people. And because of our respect for the American people, we respectfully talk with President Bush. We have a respectful tone. But having said that, I don't think that that is a good definition of religion. Religion is love for your fellow man, brotherhood, telling the truth. . .
[snip]

PELLEY: President Bush has pledged that you will not be allowed to possess a nuclear weapon and will use military force if necessary.

AHMADEINEJAD: I think Mr. Bush, if he wants his party to win the next election, there are cheaper ways and ways to go about this. I can very well give him a few ideas so that the people vote for him. He should respect the American people. They should not bug the telephone conversations of their citizens. They should not kill the sons and daughters of the American nation. They should not squander the taxpayers' money and give them to weapons companies. And also help the people, the victims of Katrina. People will vote for them if they do these things. But if they insist on what they are saying right now, this will not help them. Again, nobody can hurt the Iranian people. And history tells us that the people who have been less than kind to the Iranian people, they have lost out. What I'm saying, I am being very sincere here. I'm a Muslim. I cannot tell a lie. I am supposed to tell the truth. What I'm saying is that President Bush's conduct in Iraq is wrong. And his wrong conduct is behind his party losing the previous elections. This is very clear. The American people are very much dismayed with the behavior and the conduct of the present administration. They are not dismayed with Iran. In fact, the two nations are very close to one another. An example of that would be the letter sent to me by an American scholar a few days ago.

PELLEY: You mentioned telling the truth as a Muslim, and as you know so much better than I do, Verse 42 of the second sura: "The truth shall not be obscured by falsehood, and those who know the truth must tell it." But when I ask you a question as direct as "Will you pledge not to test a nuclear weapon?" you you dance all around the question. You never say "yes." You never say "no."

(Note: Abdullah Al Araby, writing in Islam Review, explains that “unlike most religions, within Islam there are certain provisions under which lying is not simply tolerated, but actually encouraged … When dealing with Muslims, one must keep in mind that Muslims can communicate something with apparent sincerity, when in reality they may have just the opposite agenda in their hearts. Bluntly stated, Islam permits Muslims to lie anytime that they perceive that their own well-being, or that of Islam, is threatened.”)

The above quote came from The Free Thinker. Sometimes Athiests are useful.

Back to the interview . . .

AHMADEINEJAD: Well, thank you for that. You are like a CIA investigator. And you are . . .

PELLEY: I am just a reporter. I am a simple, average American reporter.

AHMADEINEJAD: This is not a Baghdad prison. Please, this is not a secret prison in Europe. This is not Abu Ghraib. This is Iran. I'm the president of this country. Well, I think that I've gone beyond what you've asked me, above and beyond. And I think that if you speak to your job as a reporter, what I have said so far, again, goes above and beyond what you ask me.

PELLEY: One last thing. So important for the American people to understand. When your airplane approaches Manhattan this week, you will look out the window and you will see that the World Trade Center is gone. Many Americans, Mr. President, to be frank, believe that you look out that window and you say to yourself, "Good. Somebody got 'em." They believe our countries are enemies.

AHMADEINEJAD: Well, you shouldn't speak on behalf of the American people. I can speak on behalf of the Iranian people, but you cannot speak on behalf of the American people. Why do you insist on doing that? Why do you not allow the American people to speak for themselves? Why? Let them speak for themselves. The people gathered around the White House a couple of days ago. They spoke whatever was in their hearts and minds. Are they not American citizens? Hundreds of thousands of people have rallied against the war. Are they not citizens? Our government at the time expressed its condemnation. We issued an official communiqué condemning that incident. How can you, in your mind, accuse and condemn others? Well, if an Iranian person for that matter had done the same thing, it would have been shameful, and it would not have been fair. So, again, this is not fair. Maybe this is your point of view or also perhaps your editor's point of view. And you are saying that the American people are saying these things. The American people still don't know who was behind the bombing of the Twin Towers. Many books in the U.S. have been written about the incident., and there are questions circling in your society. Once you go back, go to the streets, ask the local people who was behind this, what were the reason for that? And, again, I fail to see why you continually say “the American people.“ I have the latest surveys. Eighty percent of the American citizens say that the American government knew about the attack beforehand. They had information. . .

If you want to know why Ahamadinejad wants the Democrats to win the next national election, please read The Enemy at Home by Dinesh D’Souza. Here’s a quote:

“In reality, the left already has a foreign policy and a strategy and it is called working in tandem with bin Laden to defeat Bush. As we have seen, the left and the Islamic radicals operate like the two sides of a scissors, each prong working separately , but toward the same end . . .the same goal of defeating Bush in Iraq, and they need each other to accomplish this goal. . .”

Protests Against Ahmadinejad on Monday

Congressman Duncan Hunter issued a statement Sunday morning from Mackinac Island directed to Columbia University.

"To host the leader of Iran when he supports terrorists that are moving deadly roadside bombs across the Iraqi border to be used against American troops is a slap in the face for the entire 165,000 men and women in Iraq and to those that have served before them," said Hunter.
"If President Lee Bollinger follows through with this hosting of the leader of Iran, I will move in Congress to cut off every single type of Federal Funding to Columbia University. If the left-wing leaders of academia will not support our troops, they, in the very least, should not support our adversaries. This event, following the slanderous action of MoveOn.org, depicting General Petraeus as "General Betray Us," in the New York Times represents the emergence of the extreme left-wing in American politics." Concluding, "I think it is time for the Democrat party to denounce this fringe element in their party," said Hunter.

America’s Leftist- Marxist Islamic Alliance Fuels Anti-Semitism

By now you’ve seen it all over the news. “Rep.Virgil Goode, Fifth District of Virginia, sent a letter to some voters in his district attacking Minnesota Representative Ellison’s plan to use the Koran as the scripture by which he will be sworn into office for the coming Congressional term.”

If you want a “fair and balanced” view from the far left, go to today’s New York Times and read The Lone Muslim Congressman Speaks Out. It’s a recap of CNN’s Wolf Blitzer’s gentle interview with Ellison. Oh, and of course Blitzer asks Ellison if he thinks Goode is a Bigot. Not surprisingly, Blitzer failed to mention Ellison’s anti-semitism or his C.A.I.R. sponsorship. I do suggest that you read this if only to leave a comment!

Gates of Vienna posted on Mr. Ellison’s somewhat checkered past, including his extreme anti-Semitism and the fact that CAIR had underwritten his campaign.

The leftist Jihad has already taken over Europe. Read today’s “The Death of Europe."

Mark Steyn's excellent new book is raising an issue that very few people are thinking about these days; namely the demographic time bomb that threatens the very existence of Europe as we know it. . . According to writer Paul Bekien of the Brussels Journal – who catalogued some of these figures – the European decline also explains the anti-Semitism and anti-Americanism in Europe. America and Israel will fight for freedom. Too many Europeans will submit to tyranny.

A very good read on this Jihad in the west is “The Grand Chess Masters: The Bear and the Dragon,” by David J. Jonsson, author of Islamic Economics and the Final Jihad: The Muslim Brotherhood to the Leftist/Marxist - Islamist Alliance (Salem Communications (May 30, 2006).

Here are some excerpts:

. . .Few are addressing who are the enemies and what are their goal. In effect the West is still rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic, deciding how may tables to have and what time the games should start and of course when they should end.

The game has started, the strategies for "Checkmate" are in place. It is time for the America and the West to wake up. The "Cold War" has not ended, the nuclear armed totalitarian regimes have united, and this time they have added the Isalmists who are willing to die for the cause. . . .

Likud leader Benjamin Netanyahu on Novemeber 13 drew a direct analogy between Iran and Nazi Germany.

"It's 1938 and Iran is Germany. And Iran is racing to arm itself with atomic bombs," Netanyahu told delegates to the annual United Jewish Communities General Assembly, repeating the line several times, like a chorus, during his address. "Believe him and stop him," the opposition leader said of Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. "This is what we must do. Everything else pales before this." . . .

The Isalmists along with their Leftist/Marxist alliance partners meanwhile are quietly assuming key positions in the governments, the media and even financial institutions. . . .

The enemy has the goal of removing the hegemony of the United States and the West and to take away our freedoms and liberty to be replaced by a totalitarian government in a New World Order. The strategy is not limited to war, WMDs, and terrorism; it extends to economic warfare, illegal immigration and open borders, media propaganda and even the control of the government by elected officials. . . .

Perhaps most importantly, the administration needs to have a coherent plan for achieving energy independence. Independence cannot be attained in a reasonable time frame through alternative fuels such as wind, solar, ethanol and biomass. All energy forms and conservation must be addressed in an all out program.

Republicans last year offered oil and other fuel companies some $11 billion in tax breaks – funds that will encourage them to drill more domestically. These provisions are now in jeopardy by the newly elected members of Congress. Last year the UK instituted increased tax on domestic production, the result was a decline in exploration in the North Sea. The UK is now a net importer of natural gas.

Funding for the totalitarian regimes bent on the destruction of America, Israel and the West comes from the control of oil and the sale of products and services purchased by the U.S. and other Western countries in the name of near term increased profits and low cost. Remember you are voting at the ballot box and the dollars and Euro you spend. Vote wisely!

Meanwhile the Iran-Armenia gas pipeline will be launched in March of 2007.

On Tuesday, the Iranian President, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, predicted that Britain, Israel and the US would eventually disappear, like the Egyptian pharaohs.

"Any power that is close to God will survive while the powers who are far from God will disappear like the pharaohs," he was quoted as saying.

Ahmadinejad on Thursday once again proclaimed that the Iranian nation will celebrate the international acknowledgement of its nuclear programmes on the 28 anniversary of the 1979 Islamic revolution next February. . .

Iran plans to make operational 3000 centrifuges until the end of the Iranian year (20 March 2007) but so far only two cascades of each 164 centrifuges have officially been completed.

According to the Islamic Republic News Agency, President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said on Thursday:

He said the Iranian nation will soon reach the zenith of nuclear success and will celebrate a nuclear victory during the `Ten-Day Dawn' ceremonies (Feb 11-20) marking the anniversary of the victory of the 1979 Islamic Revolution.

The Iranian nation will resist bullying powers and will change its approach towards them if they continue in their wrong policies toward the Islamic Republic of Iran, the president said.

Another good read is “Analysis: Three crises pileup?”

Here are some excerpts:

America's enemies took advantage of a quagmired U.S. in Iraq to advance their quest for membership in the nuclear club. North Korea blasted its way into the club to become its ninth member and Iran was well on its way to becoming number ten. Both North Korea and Iran long ago concluded that nuclear power was the only credible deterrent against a U.S. attack. The U.S. predicament also gave Iran a rare opportunity to push its radical Shiite pawns forward in Iraq, Lebanon and the Palestinian territories. . .

Clearly, whatever watered down compromise the U.N. Security Council's five permanent members plus Germany can agree to, Iran won't be deterred. Much has been made of Iran's Achilles' heel, e.g., its limited refining capacity for gasoline to keep almost five million vehicles on the road. Three out of four cars are more than 30 years old or have logged 120,000 miles (President Ahmadinejad drives a battered 20-year-old Peugeot). Even though it pumps 10 percent of the world's oil, Iran still has to import 43 percent of its gasoline, . . .

Iran's staunch ally Venezuela has pledged to make up whatever shortfall occurs. Cars and trucks are being converted to run on natural gas at over 100 conversion centers. The government believes this will save $5 billion a year on gasoline imports. Iran has the world's second largest natural gas reserve after Russia -- 16 percent of the world's total. . .

Baiting the U.S. and its allies, Ahmadinejad announced Iran "is now a nuclear power" and added the United States and Britain to Israel on the list of countries doomed to disappear. "The Iranian nation will continue on its nuclear path powerfully and will celebrate a nuclear victory soon," said the diminutive president.

Radical Islam is not confined to Iraq and Iran. It is spreading among Europe's 20 million Muslims from Sweden to Spain. Militant minorities reject multiculturalism. And non-Muslim Europeans are beginning to reassess their pre-World War II and post-Cold War doctrine that appeasement is the better part of valor.
