Religious Conservatives Should Leave the GOP!

Religious Conservatives Should Leave the GOP!
By J. D. Longstreet
*************************

If I have said it once, I have said it a dozen times! The Republican Party no longer wants conservatives, especially RELIGIOUS CONSERVATIVES! As if one needed proof, here comes an article by Kathleen Parker to end the discussion. The article is titled: “ Heresy and Other Truths.” In her article, Ms. Parker says:

“As Republicans sort out the reasons for their defeat, they likely will overlook or dismiss the gorilla in the pulpit.

Three little letters, great big problem: G-O-D.

I'm bathing in holy water as I type.

To be more specific, the evangelical, right-wing, oogedy-boogedy branch of the GOP is what ails the erstwhile conservative party and will continue to afflict and marginalize its constituents if reckoning doesn't soon cometh."

You can read the entire article at:

This underscores the on-going battle within the Republican Party these days. Religious conservatives are flat-out at odds with the moderates and liberals in the party and they (The moderates and liberals) want us (The conservatives, including the religious conservatives) gone. In fact, they seem to want GOD gone from the party.

I am indebted to Ms. Parker for “backing up” what I have been saying for many years now. Conservatives need to get out of the GOP and found their own political party and be done with it. When I refer to CONSERVATIVES, I, of course, mean the religious conservatives because there are very few, if any, non-religious conservatives. You must understand that, in my opinion, the term “religious conservatives” means ALL conservatives.

There has been worry in recent years that the union of social and religious conservatives and the Republican Party is beginning to fray. I beg to differ. As far as I am concerned, it isn’t fraying. It is threadbare! It’s OVER! It’s long since time for conservatives, social, AND religious, to move on.

Look, as a social, and religious, and fiscal, and political, and every other kind of conservative, I can tell you, with no hesitation, conservatives need their own party. We are not wanted any longer, if we ever were, in the GOP. It is getting embarrassing for me as a staunch conservative to maintain my allegiance to a party that so obviously wishes I would LEAVE!

Turning the tables on the GOP would taste very good at this point. They know they have a snowball’s chance of winning another election without conservative support. If we leave the party they will be forced to come to us and beg for our support in any future elections. That’s fine by me!

Yes, founding a third party is going to be tough. Yes, we may never have a Conservative Party candidate on a national ticket. But, conservatives would be able to swing elections and you had better believe our support would be sought. That alone would give us more input into future elections than we have now. Much more.

I am a conservative first and a republican second. I am a republican because there was no conservative party, as such, to turn to. Given a choice, I would have joined the Conservative Party and never been a Republican in the first place. There are hosts of southern voters who feel the same way. I suspect there is another host of voters across the other regions of the country that feel the same way.

In two years we have another extremely important election coming up. If conservatives want to see any gains for conservatism in the Congress we had better get ourselves organized and ready. We cannot do that by staying in the Republican Party.

  1. I would like to see the non-conservative Republicans leave the Republican party.

By the time we re-establish, we will have lost many elections. It will take time for voters to accept a third party as viable.

We need to overpower those moderate voices with strong leadership (laughable, huh)?

I certainly agree with you in theory.

  2. The far right religious wing of the GOP needs to get out and stay out. They have done more harm to the GOP than anything else within the party. The Wildmons, the Hagee's, Dobson, and Perkins, all wannabe Kingmakers need to go. They , like the far left of the Democrat Party have destroyed what once was a party of the people, the common people. The ones who attend church regularly. The ones who believe in the sanctity of marriage. The ones who are against abortion. That is what once made up the GOP but that was not their only agenda as it became in the early 2000's. The ones who stood for those principles also believed in conservative spending policies and believed in teaching folks how to fish, instead of giving them a fish. The far right wing of the GOP created the disaster of the 2006 election and have themselves to blame for the further decline in this election of 08. Yes, by all means, get out, stay out and let the Mary and Joe American retake the GOP and base it on the solid foundation it once stood for and not on some ridiculous "three legged stool" approach which preaches intolerance toward any who do not hold their "three legged stool" principle to be the Holy Grail of the GOP.
Dick Armny was right when he said that the GOP sold out to the religious far right and it would come back and bite them in the butt.
The far right and the far left make up less than ten percent of the voters on either side but yet have been able to control the total of both parties.
By all means let the religious far right leave the GOP and the far left kooks leave the Democrat Party and we will see a different country, one that reflects what this country was founded upon.

Longstreet this is the first thing you have said of late that I agree with. By all means leave and do not tary GO NOW.
I am ready to see the real GOP emerge once again and good riddance to the religious far right.

  4. I am ashamed of the GOP and people like Buffoon.

You people apparently don't remember Reagan and his strong faith and values.

Faith and values are what we should expect from our politicians - it is the only reason we should trust them.--if they have a moral compass and follow the ten commandments which guide us in moral behavior to do things like - NOT LIE.

I agree with Maggie; boot the lefties out of the GOP - and let them join their other godless friends; the socialists who think Jesus was a socialist!

God talk shouldn't be turning people off - it should be warming hearts. God talk is only turning people off because you're accepting the atheist nazi propaganda that's so prevalent in society today...

    nightmare...
I don't disagree with a moral compass being needed in society, and I'm no atheist, the delivery is what is outdated and you have so graciously done me the favor of displaying, and proving my point...
see how freaked out you got when you thought some one was attacking Jesus?
